<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
A babe is born in the shadows of the ravine city, a child who will end the self-imposed exile of the dwarves and usher in a new age of glory.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Years later, Ravine Guard Carnac Thayn discovers a break-in at the Scriptorium. A dwarf has been murdered and a book stolen, but the ruling council do nothing.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Then, when Carn is called to investigate thuds and crashes from the mines, old horror rises from the deep, and the city is threatened with slaughter.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Rumors begin to circulate about a mythical axe said to be lost below the earth, an axe wielded by the dwarf lords of old that might just be the last hope of a race marked to die.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
But deception is rife, and unseen forces manipulate all paths to the future.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
It is a pivotal moment for the dwarves, and Carn must make a choice that will either save or damn his people.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Blood will flow in rivers through the ravine. Friends will become foes. A name will be forgotten.</div>

<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
We’re days away from the reboot of the <strong style="box-sizing: inherit;">Nameless Dwarf</strong> series and the launch of book one: <em style="box-sizing: inherit;">Ravine of Blood and Shadow</em>. The entire series has been completely revised, with many cuts and a fair few additions. </div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
The net effect is a much more sharply focused story that concentrates solely on the Nameless Dwarf, whereas the original series was still bound to the Shader story arc in places. Now the path is open for the continuation of the story with book seven, <em style="box-sizing: inherit;">King of Arnoch</em>, which I hope to finish before the end of the year (sooner, if I get a break from the current crop of commissioned work).</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
Please remember to sign up to my mailing list to qualify for a <strong style="box-sizing: inherit;">FREE</strong> e-copy of Ravine of Blood and Shadow (I will be sending out an email to all subscribers on launch day, offering either an Amazon gift copy or a Smashwords coupon).</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
<strong style="box-sizing: inherit;">ARCs</strong> available to anyone who is willing to leave an honest review. Bookbloggers/tubers etc can contact me via the contact drop down menu on this website.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">

I finally have the go ahead for the release of the Nameless Dwarf reboot, starting with Ravine of Blood and Shadow, which will be released at the end of January 2019.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
As many of you know, Ravine of Blood and Shadow is a fully revised version of Carnifex: A Portent of Blood. As well as some prudent cuts, it also features a new prologue and some simplification of names and language. The new version is a much faster, easier read.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
If anyone bought the original (or the Legends of the Nameless Dwarf: The Complete Saga box set) please email me at derekprior[at]gmail.com and I’ll add you to the list for a free copy of Ravine of Blood and Shadow. </div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
I’m also still gathering names for ARCs, so again, please email me your interest.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
The first six books of the reboot series will be released about one month apart, and then there will be three new novels.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">
For now, here’s the cover of Ravine of Blood and Shadow.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #484848; font-family: Lato, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 1.5em;">

<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
Centuries ago, the Isle of Branikdür was mysteriously abandoned by the ruling Hélum Empire. Ever since, rival clans have battled for supremacy at the bidding of their sacred sorcerers.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
During the once-a-year armistice for the Festival of Proving, the gifted warrior Snaith Harrow aims to leave his mark in the fight circles before marrying his childhood sweetheart. But following a freak accident, he discovers a terrible secret about the girl he loves:</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
Tey Moonshine is a daughter of suffering, and she has fallen prey to the things that stalk the netherworld. Under the influence of a demon that hides within her marrow, she gouges a magical codex into her flesh, believing it will make her the greatest sorcerer the isle has ever known.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
Maimed from his accident and no longer able to fight, Snaith is apprenticed to the clan sorcerer, Theurig, and Tey is sent away from the village.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
As Snaith is thrust headlong into a sorcerer’s world of misdirection and control, Tey must master the darkness that possesses her, if she is to stand together with him against the coming storm.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
For the ripples of forbidden magic have roused the sleeping might of the Hélum Empire.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
War is coming.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
A war the clans can never win.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1em; vertical-align: baseline;">
And the fate of Branikdür lies in the hands of a warrior turned wizard and a deranged girl who grows more deadly by the day.</div>

Prior sold to Audible Studios<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve signed a very nice deal with </span><strong style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Audible Studios</strong><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;"> for the production and publication of </span><em style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">SORCERERS’ ISLE</strong></em><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">, the first book of </span><em style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><strong style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">THE SHADOW CYCLE</strong></em><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: 'Open Sans', Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">.</span><br />

While we also had print and ebook offers on the table, the Audible deal was by far the most attractive, and I’m really excited to be working with them. Given Audible’s unparalleled promotion, I was loathe to relinquish audio rights to anyone else. I hope to have a release date soon. The ebook and print versions will be released at the same time as the audiobook, and the ebook will be available as a pre-order from Amazon very soon.</div>

<span style="background-color: #fcfcfc; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Shadrak the Unseen should have known better. <span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">I'm now three chapters into the first book a brand new fantasy series called Snaith and Moonshine: Sorcerers of the Weyd. Book 1 is provisionally titled The Codex of Her Scars.</span></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Snaith and Moonshine begins on the Isle of Branikdür, a dismal backwater just beyond the reach of the mighty Helum Empire. Branikdür is populated with warring clans who are only prevented from wiping each other out by the guidance of sorcerers in service to the Weyd, an overarching god of many facets.</span></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">The protagonist is a young man, Herrick Snaith, who has recently come of age. Herrick is a man of unusual mental abilities who is determined to be the greatest warrior the clan has ever known. The local Weyd sorcerer, Theurig, however, has other ideas.</span></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">When the Eisteddfod comes to his village of Malogoi, Herrick has two goals in mind: perform well before the High King in the fighting circles, and ask for the hand of his childhood sweetheart, Tey Moonshine in marriage.</span></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">But when disaster strikes in the form of a black bear, and both Herrick and Tey are brutally injured, Herrick discovers that Tey Moonshine isn't the girl he'd thought her to be. And not only that, but the Malogoi Clan has no use for either of them now they are too disfigured to fight or plow. Herrick is left with no other choice than to try out for an apprenticeship with Theurig, so he can become an untouchable servant of the Weyd. If he fails the test of initiation, he'll suffer the fate of all who are unable to fulfill their role in clan society: he'll be dragged out to Coldman's Copse and left as fodder for the fomoraig, a race of demons who once ruled the world.</span></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Tey Moonshine, though, has already endured a lifetime of pain at the hands of her father, and she's learned how to turn suffering to her advantage. When Theurig presents her with the same choice as Herrick, she couldn't care less about the outcome of the test. She knows things even the Weyd sorcerers have not discovered, and she's always had a somewhat ambivalent relationship with death.</span></div>
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">Even as Herrick and Tey are separated by events, their lives are inextricably woven together. While Herrick learns that magick is nothing at all like the clansfolk have been led to believe, Tey discovers it is even further from the the legerdemain taught by the Weyd sorcerers.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="color: #3d596d; font-size: 15px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;">But with each discovery comes a new set of risks, and the happenings on the Isle of Branikdür arouse the concern of the Helum Empire, and a cabal of warlocks of a far deadlier ilk than anything the Weyd has to offer.</span></div>

But when contagion turns Wesley Harding's world insane, and horror enters his home, the attic is the last place left to hide. At nine years old, he finds himself alone in the dark, amid heaped-up piles of the familiar and the unknown. Gunshots and howls punctuate the thunderstorm outside. Crashes and groans come from below. There isn't much time, and Wesley must uncover the secrets of the attic, if he is to survive the night.</span></div>

Prior<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Here's an interview I did for Flurries of Words a few years back. How times have changed!</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I see that you have had many careers--psychiatric nurse, personal trainer, editor, monk, actor....how do these varied life experiences influence your writing?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">During my twenty-odd years working in mental health I got to see all kinds of conditions and behaviors. It was mostly the personality disorders that influenced my writing, the cognitive biases we all carry to some extent, one person’s propensity for paranoia, another’s for depression; the image people have of themselves contrasted with how others see them; difficulties people have in relationships, or with self-worth, self-belief, or self-preservation.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">My experiences also helped me to look at how different personalities deal with trauma, which was a huge help when writing Rhiannon in <i>Cadman’s Gambit</i>, <i>Best Laid Plans</i>, and <i>The Unweaving</i>. Often in fiction, and particularly in fantasy, we are presented with stock character types who have predictable, even cliched, responses to the stresses placed upon them. I think my experiences in mental health have given me a few more options to play with.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The Nameless Dwarf has aspects of his character that were definitely influenced by my mental health work. He has a degree of bi-polar disorder (much more serious in the depressive phase), elements of low self-worth, and occasional explosive outbursts, which are sometimes devastatingly violent. That said, he’s probably the most solid and dependable character in the entire series, something the other characters acknowledge, each in their own way.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The personal training has had a small influence on the physicality of some of my fight scenes. It’s more explicit in <i>The Archon’s Assassin</i>, in which Rhiannon trains in a hardcore gym, with a host of recognizable gym rats.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The editing experience has been extremely helpful with reviewing subsequent drafts. I always do anything up to six layers of self-editing on my books, but this is not enough by itself. I believe you need to have another set of eyes go over the work and so I use external editors, proof readers and beta readers.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">In the later 90s I had a five month postulancy with the Carmelite friars in Australia. That involved living with a couple of religious communities, which helped with the Abbey of Pardes characters in the Shader books. I studied theology at Notre Dame in Fremantle, which gave me a lot of material for Shader’s internal conflicts and for some of the moral dilemmas he faces.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I’m not sure how much influence my acting had on my writing, except maybe through my familiarity with classic texts (Shakespeare and Greek and Roman drama). There are little tributes here and there, such as the way the weather sometimes mirrors a character’s internal state (as in <i>Macbeth</i>). Silas references <i>King Lear</i> briefly in <i>The Ebon Staff</i>, and Otto Blightey spouts the philosophy of cruelty found in the works of the French dramatist Antonin Artaud. </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I think, though, that the effect of these multifarious careers has been to give me a broad view of human nature in a variety of settings. For me it is the strange idiosyncrasies that make the character recognizably human (even when they are not) and gives the reader something to identify with. There is no “everyman”, no generic human type that we can recognize as ourselves. We see ourselves in the failings and peculiarities of fictional characters. That’s what makes us believe.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">How much of yourself is in your main characters? Do you identify with any one character more than another? How? Why?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Chesterton said that a bad novel tells us more about the author than the characters, so I hope I’m not too prevalent in my works. I think, though, it is inevitable that an author leaves traces of him/herself in every character, but some more than others. I have characters who act as I would wish to act in certain situations, and other characters (maybe Nils, Silas, Ilesa, Shader even at times) who act as I probably would. </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I think I identify most with Elias Wolfe from the Shader books, but also with aspects of Dr. Cadman and Shader himself (who both embody extreme versions of some of my personality traits). </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I've read how Dungeons and Dragons was a key influence in starting you on the path to writing in that genre. What made you stick with the fantasy?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">My interest in fantasy pre-dated my interest in Dungeons and Dragons. I was introduced to the Conan novels of R.E. Howard at a very early age. I also read Tolkien, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter books, and Michael Moorcock. I started playing D&D in 1979 and continued for a decade and a half. It resurfaced from time to time in later years, but never with the same obsession.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I first started trying to write a fantasy novel at age thirteen. The problem was, the main characters were little guys with hairy feet who insisted were in no way, shape or form hobbits!</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">David Gemmell’s novels drew me back into fantasy in 1984 when I won a copy of <i>Legend</i> as the prize for English literature. I read all of his subsequent books avidly and I don’t think anyone has quite come up to the mark since his death a few years ago. </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">

<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I generally dislike the fantasy genre: too many farm boys, too many dragons, and way too much “fantasy speak”. Of course, much of that has changed with the new generation of writers, but here I dislike the move toward naturalism, including lengthy descriptions of the taste of a meal, and a tendency to show human nature in its worst possible light. Gemmell’s books can be brutal, but there’s always a sense of good triumphing over evil, no matter the cost. In some of the new fantasy books, it’s hard to tell the difference between good and evil, and generally the worlds depicted are not worlds I’d like to inhabit.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">

<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">There are genuinely exciting writers emerging, though. I think Joe Abercrombie has a flair for dialect, which finds its way into the narrative portions as well as dialogue. His character building is also top notch, although he seems about as jolly in his world view as Jean Paul Sartre at times. </span></span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">How do you find time to write with all of your various commitments? What is your first priority?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">My first priority is to my wife and children and to my faith. Once that’s all in place I take care of my editing commitments and make sure I leave enough time to write. When I am working on a novel I like to set aside at least an hour a day, often much more. This tends to be between 4.30 AM and 7 AM, before everyone wakes up. This works well even when I am editing as the commissions tend to occupy the times when the baby is napping during the day and then I can work uninterrupted in the early evening. If I have deadlines to reach, I have been known to work through the night.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I also set aside time for physical training most days and like to get out and about whenever possible (particularly now we live in Florida).</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Your Nameless Dwarf series has been very successful but it is quite a different flavour from your Shader series, even though both take place in the same universe. Why the difference? What explains it?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">The <i>Shader</i> series is vast and involves a large number of point of view characters. <i>The Nameless Dwarf</i>, however, focuses on four point of view characters and gradually reveals them to the reader so that we get to know their most intimate thoughts and desires. Nameless himself is quite a lovable character (when he’s not being violent or depressed). He has elements of Hilaire Belloc, Falstaff, and Oliver Read in his personality, so he’s great fun in a tavern. </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I think the humor in <i>The Nameless Dwarf</i> really helps to engage readers. There’s a lot of wordplay between Silas and Nils, innuendo between Nameless and Ilesa (and a sicker kind from Otto Blightey), and Nameless is never short of a one-liner or a song. There’s a fair bit of humor in <i>Shader</i> too, but most of it comes from Dr. Cadman and Elias Wolf, whereas the other characters are much more troubled. I suspect that is the key difference: Nameless is a much more likable character than Shader, although I think Shader is certainly intriguing and has very human flaws to his character. The contrast is a bit like that between Druss the legend and Thomas Covenant.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">What one thing would you really like your readers and our audience to know about you and your work?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I have a wonderful family who inspire my writing but also help out: Theo and I bounce ideas around for days on end, usually on a long walk. He also likes to listen to the stories read out loud, which is when I catch most of the errors. Paula picks up on my continuity problems and also formats, proofreads, and helps promote the work. Cordelia is just cute (she’s only 10 months old).</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">How much research goes into your books?</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I try to write about things I already know about -- fantasy, arms and armor, religion, mysticism, magic, and relationships, but occasionally the plot requires that I research a subject to add layers of credibility to the language I use and the descriptions. I did a lot of research on sailing for <i>Best Laid Plans</i> and did the same for blacksmithing for <i>Bane of the Liche Lord</i>. I looked into volcanoes for <i>The Archon’s Assassin</i>, which came in handy for <i>Bane of the Liche Lord</i> too.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">I tend to make a lot of notes, particularly regarding terminology. I use a lot of this in the first draft but often cut it back to a minimum later as I don’t want to draw too much attention to the research. </span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;"><span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"></span><br /></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Theo got into <i>Resident Evil</i> and from there went on to <i>Marvel Zombies</i>. We ended up watching <i>Shaun of the Dead</i> together and then went on a six month zombie fest, watching pretty much anything we could find in the genre until we were sick to death (!) of it. All this zombiemania inevitably led to me putting zombies in <i>The Axe of the Dwarf Lords </i>as well as writing a zombie short for <i>The Gate 2</i> (edited by Robert J. Duperre) called <i>The Indian Rope Trick</i>.</span></span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; min-height: 14px;">

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">We’ve made a few zombie short films as Dizeazed Productionz (available on Youtube). <span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large; letter-spacing: 0px;">Dwarves in fantasy may be dour, beer-swilling, gold-digging troglodytes, but there’s no doubt about their importance in myth and folklore. In the </span><i style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: x-large; letter-spacing: 0px;">Prose Edda</i><span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large; letter-spacing: 0px;"> four dwarves (Norori, Suori, Austri and Vestri) hold up the sky, and there’s even some scholarly speculation that the little folk may have had a hand in the creation of the first humans, Ask and Embla.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large; letter-spacing: 0px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The word “dwarf” (Old English <i>dweorg</i>, Old Norse <i>dvergr</i>) has been linked to the Indo-European root <i>dreugh</i>, which gives us the English “dream” and “trug” (deception), which has important ramifications for the dwarves of my own fantasy world of Aethir.</span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Dwarves have been around in popular culture for as long as I can remember (my longterm memory is significantly better than my short, which probably has something to do with my dwarven love of anything that can be drunk from a flagon). The Brothers Grimm recorded the folk tale of S<i>now White and the Seven Dwarves</i> as long ago as 1812. Tolkien gave us an ensemble of silly-hat-wearing dwarves in <i>The Hobbit</i> (1937), and Terry Gilliam’s <i>Time Bandits</i> (1981) had a band of chronologically challenged, diminutive treasure-seekers doing battle with evil.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Dwarves are often associated with the deep places of the earth. It’s a connection that goes back to the <i>Eddas</i> and is a characteristic of the dwarves of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. In my own universe, the dwarves of Aethir are “created” by the scientist Sektis Gandaw in order to mine the precious ore, scarolite. However, there are darker and older secrets to their nature waiting to be discovered.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I was always quite ambivalent towards Thorin Oakenshield and his companions in <i>The Hobbit</i> -- they are often avaricious to the point of foolhardiness, although it would be hard to deny their bravery. Gimli, in <i>The Lord of the Rings</i>, is perhaps more likable, particularly in his score-keeping scene with Legolas at Helms Deep, but also for his hardiness in the epic battle in the mines of Moria, the quintessential dwarven environment.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Something of a dwarf stereotype has developed over the years. Some of it comes from mythology, some from Tolkien’s feasting and drinking dwarves, and much from the development of the race in <i>Dungeons and Dragons</i> and <i>Warhammer</i>. Despite their often bellicose natures, dwarves tend to provide a touch of grouchy comedy to fantasy tales -- “Nobody tosses a dwarf,” says John Rhys-Davies’ Gimli in the Peter Jackson film.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Various subtypes of dwarf have arisen, numerous clans, but there is almost always an immediately identifiable quality of dwarfishness about them. Generally it’s alcohol, although dwarves are also very much bound up with axes, stoicism, and a love of shiny objects that have to be dug out of rock. </span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I don’t know if it’s just me, but dwarves often have a flavour of Scottishness about them, so much so that a RPG figure I once painted for the Nameless Dwarf had tartan britches. Arguably, the trend was taken too far in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit, but it's been a staple of the Warhammer universe, perhaps epitomized by the character Gotrek. Someone once stated they felt the Nameless Dwarf was another Gotrek type. The funny thing is, the Nameless Dwarf has been around since 1979 (when there was no Warhammer), which means he predates Gotrek by nearly two decades. </span></span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Back in the days when I belonged to the legendary Wargaming Society sequestered away at the back of the Archery recreation ground’s public toilets, I was in the unsavoury habit of playing Dungeons and Dragons with a crabby bunch of ne’er-do-wells. We had the back room of the club (the front was for serious gamers in the Napoleonics tradition). We painted the walls and ceiling black, let the cobwebs grow, and gathered around an enormous (black) table with six-packs of Jacob’s Club biscuits for endless campaigns that took us all the way to the Abyss and back.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">There were a few memorable dwarves amongst the players. One was particularly annoying (I forget his name). He was literally dripping with artifacts, was as indestructible as the Hulk, and had the “my axe is bigger than yours” personality type. The shogger had even been resurrected a couple of times. He just refused to go away. He did go away, eventually, though, when he took a pop at a certain dwarf with no name who always had the luck of the gods on his side. Chopped the bleeder’s head off and that was an end to the matter.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Another player had a fat dwarf, aptly named Falstaff, but all I can remember of him is that he was always lagging behind so he could “tufty” the party’s only female (an elf of all things!)</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">I pretty much always played dwarves. I tried other races, but the minute those characters were killed (and inevitably they were) I got straight back into my comfort zone. </span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">When my brother decided to DM a particular nasty orc-fest at the club, a super-party was assembled and I realized I was going to need a pretty special dwarf to get the job done.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">That’s when the original Nameless Dwarf was created. He was nameless back then because he didn’t need any sort of personality. He was a tank, a hack-and-slash superhero. He was the dwarven Terminator (even before Arnold had first uttered “I’ll be back.”) Some time after his creation I bought a miniature figure called The Dwarf with No Name -- a cigar-smoking, gun-toting, poncho-wearing dwarf based on the Clint Eastwood character. It wasn’t quite appropriate for Nameless, but it was a cool figure nonetheless.</span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Over the years, the character developed, but he also grew more and more powerful, and that’s never a good thing in gaming. Eventually I retired him. Years later I reinvented him, but that was when I learned the hard truth that roleplaying games are for people less imaginatively and cognitively challenged than an old codger like me. I shoved my polyhedral dice in the attic and left Nameless to the Void.</span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Many years later I gave him a cameo in my first fantasy novel, <i>The Resurrection of Deacon Shader</i>. Back then I was into being terribly, terribly literary and reducing all my characters to two-dimensional talking heads. I did the same with Nameless, although a lot of readers were impressed with his first appearance. With barely a word spoken, he scares the crap out of the hero, Shader, displaying some of that elemental violence he’d had as a D&D character.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">When I started the total rewrite of <i>Shader</i>, I decided Nameless needed a bigger role. In book 4, <i>The Archon’s Assassin</i>, he makes a fun sidekick for Shadrak the Unseen, and book 5 is all about Nameless (having a very bad day).</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">When I was staying in Chicago a few years ago I found myself at a loose end while my son was out catching frogs. I sat at a friend’s dining room table and resolved to write a Nameless short story to sell to a magazine. I wrote the 5000 word short story version of <i>The Ant-Man of Malfen</i> in one sitting and liked where the character was going. He had elements of Shakespeare’s Falstaff (<i>Henry IV</i> 1&2), Hilaire Belloc’s drinking, singing, and camaraderie, a crippling manic depression, and a smattering of David Gemmell’s Druss the Legend.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Nameless has some of those stereotypical dwarven characteristics -- the axe and the grog, but he’s also a rather unique, complex character who (importantly for me) has some surprising vulnerabilities.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The story was accepted by <i>Pulp Empire</i>, but then I went on to expand it to a novella. It starts after the Nameless, under the influence of a malevolent black axe, virtually commits genocide. The survivors of his massacre in the ravine city of Arx Gravis flee across the mountains into the nightmare lands of Qlippoth. At last free from the axe, Nameless desperately wants to find them before it’s too late (no one comes back from Qlippoth). He hires Nils Fargin, son of a criminal guildmaster, to lead him to some rather shady contacts who may be able to help.</span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">That’s where the <i>Chronicles of the Nameless Dwarf</i> start -- a guilt-ridden Nameless trying to find the survivors of his race, and knowing he’s the last person they’d want to run into. The series spans five books that take him on a journey with modest sword and sorcery beginnings to a truly epic conclusion in <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nameless-Dwarf-book-Bane-Liche-ebook/dp/B00AFQR4DA/ref=la_B005IG67BC_1_10_twi_kin_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1449944124&sr=1-10">Bane of the Liche Lord.</a></i></span></span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0.0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The series has benefited enormously from some great artwork. The first Nameless Dwarf cover was produced by C.S. Marks (<i>Elfhunter</i>). Subsequent covers were painted by Patrick Stacey (his <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007ZIKRC6/ref=series_rw_dp_sw">The Ebon Staff</a></i> and <i>Bane of the Liche Lord</i> are among my favourites). The mega-talented Anton Kokarev agreed to paint the iconic image of Nameless for the cover of the <i>Complete Chronicles</i>, which has consistently been my bestselling book, and has topped the fantasy charts on several occasions.</span></span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The Nameless Dwarf books began as a fun spinoff from the Shader series, which is much heavier epic fantasy. Something of Nameless’ old D&D luck must still linger, though, as the Chronicles have easily outsold all my other books put together. Either that, or it’s just a reminder that the little guys, in spite of all their vices, remain as popular today as they were in the days of yore.</span></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">In 2015, I began work on a follow up Nameless Dwarf story, Return of the Dwarf Lords. Based on this, I was asked by my agent to put together a complete Nameless Dwarf story arc, and so I sat down to write the tragic origins story, Carnifex, and then put together Geas of the Black Axe from some material that originally featured in my Shader series, massively revised and told from Nameless's perspective, along with approximately 60,000 of new material. Next, The Complete Chronicles were fully revised and became Revenge of the Lich.</span></span></div>
